Vicenza, palazzo Barbarano

The Grain and Glory Room

The Grain and Glory Room is devoted to the great villas in the territory of the Venetian Republic – the most innovative of Palladio's buildings. White and majestic like ancient temples, they were the nerve centres of a policy to reclaim wild, marshy countryside to be made into productive areas linked up by a network of roads and canals. On the walls and ceiling of this room we can admire the dreams of glory of the patron, Montano Barbarano, who commissioned an ambitious decorative cycle celebrating the feats of Roman emperors and Scipio.
