57th Palladio Course
Palladio vs ScamozziVicenza, 31 August - 5 September 2015
2016 is the 400th anniversary year of the death in Venice of Vincenzo Scamozzi (born in Vicenza in 1548). To mark the opening of the Scamozzian celebrations, the Palladian course will consist of a new, special module with a systematic approach to comparing the architecture of Palladio and that of Scamozzi, thus creating a dialogue highlighting continuities and differences.
The course will be held over 6 days, divided into visits, lectures and workshops inside the various buildings.
The visits are organised as thoroughgoing seminars in the featured buildings, with the aid of dossiers that illustrate the Palladian and Scamozzian project drawings, plans and sections of buildings and reference models.
The lectures in the lecture hall will deal with general themes found in the overall work of Palladio and Scamozzi and will situate it in the context of their time.
In the Palladio Labs (workshops) the participants will be involved in a hands-on approach to trying out various modes of enquiry: how do you "read" a building starting from its masonry? What does the direct examination of a Palladian autograph drawing tell us?
The teachers are all experts on Palladio and Scamozzi. The course is open to architectural historians, architects, engineers and art historians interested in exploring the works of Palladio and their actual material condition.
In the course programme the initials AP stand for buildings by Andrea Palladio (1508-1508), whilst VS stands for those by Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616).
