In four days of lessons and practical exercises, the 2002 edition of the seminar takes on an important theme regarding interventions in historic buildings: the diagnosis of the state of degradation of a building carried out using non-destructive techniques. Participants will learn and try out the principal research, analysis, observation and measurement techniques in use today that allow investigators to further their knowledge of the physical state of a building and the phenomena of settling or degradation underway without damaging the building materials, or which necessitate minimal or negligible destruction, invasion or disturbance of these materials. These techniques will first be shown theoretically, and then applied to a real building that has been chosen for study.
The participants may thus gain on-site knowledge of various techniques: endoscopy, thermography, and magnetometry; georadar, sonic (via transparency and reflection) and ultrasound surveys; tests with a flat jack (single and double), measurement of micrometric movements and how these are monitored.
The course has been organised by Renato Cevese (Università di Padova), Mario Piana (Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia) and Wolfgang Wolters (Universität Berlin).
